What Insurance Do You Need When You Turn 26?
Turning 26 is a milestone most young adults don't think much about — until the letter arrives saying they're being dropped from their parents' health plan. Here's what to do, what to get, and why this is actually the best time of your life to buy life insurance.
Under the Affordable Care Act, young adults can remain on a parent's health insurance plan until age 26. It's one of the most popular provisions in the law — and one that millions of young Americans rely on through their early career years.
Then the birthday comes. And if you're not prepared, you may find yourself uninsured before you've figured out what to do next.
Health Insurance: Act Within 60 Days
Aging off a parent's plan is a qualifying life event, giving you a Special Enrollment Period to sign up for coverage outside of Open Enrollment. You have 60 days from the date you lose coverage to enroll. Miss that window and you're uninsured until the next Open Enrollment period — which could mean months without coverage.
Your options at 26:
Employer plan. If you're working full-time, this is usually the best option. Employer-sponsored coverage is subsidized and typically offers the best value. Enroll as soon as you're eligible — don't wait for open enrollment if aging off a parent's plan qualifies you to enroll mid-year.
ACA Marketplace. If you're self-employed, freelancing, or your employer doesn't offer coverage, the marketplace is your next best option. At 26 with modest income, you may qualify for subsidies that make a solid plan genuinely affordable.
Medicaid. If your income is below the threshold in your state (roughly $21,000/year for an individual), you may qualify for Medicaid — which is free or very low cost.
Life Insurance: The Best Time You'll Ever Have to Buy It
This is the part most 26-year-olds skip entirely — and it's the part that matters most in the long run.
Life insurance premiums are based primarily on age and health. A healthy 26-year-old can lock in rates that are dramatically lower than they'll ever be again. A $500,000 20-year term policy for a healthy 26-year-old typically costs $18–$25 per month. Wait until 36, and that same policy costs $25–$35. Wait until 46, and it's $50–$80 — and that's assuming no health changes along the way.
You may be thinking: I'm 26, I don't have dependents, why do I need life insurance? A few reasons worth considering:
Student loan co-signers. If a parent co-signed your student loans, private loans don't disappear when you die — your co-signer is on the hook. A life insurance policy protects them.
You're about to have dependents. Marriage, children, a mortgage — these happen in your late 20s and 30s for most people. Buying a policy now, while you're young and healthy, locks in rates before those milestones arrive.
Health changes happen. Diabetes, high blood pressure, a mental health diagnosis — any of these can raise your premiums or limit your options. You don't know what health changes the next decade holds. Locking in coverage now protects you from future insurability issues.
The 26-Year-Old Insurance Checklist
Enroll in health insurance within 60 days of losing parent coverage — employer plan, marketplace, or Medicaid.
Buy a term life insurance policy — now, while rates are lowest. Even a small policy ($250K–$500K) locks in your health rating.
Check auto and renters insurance — you may have been on your parents' policies. Confirm you have your own coverage for your car and apartment.
Set up a basic will and beneficiary designations — if you have any assets or accounts, name a beneficiary. It takes 20 minutes and matters more than you think.
Turning 26 is one of the best opportunities you'll ever have to get your insurance foundation right — cheaply, cleanly, and before life gets complicated. Don't let the window close.
