Is Your Employer Life Insurance Enough? (Almost Certainly Not)

Most employers offer life insurance as a benefit — typically one or two times your salary. It feels like coverage. Here's why it almost never is, and what to do about it.

When your employer offers life insurance, it's easy to check that box mentally and move on. You have life insurance. Done. But the standard group life benefit — typically one to two times your annual salary — leaves most families significantly underprotected, and there are structural problems with employer coverage that most people never think about until it's too late.

The Coverage Amount Problem

The standard financial planning guidance is that life insurance should cover 10–12 times your annual income — enough to replace your earnings for a decade while your family adjusts, pays off the mortgage, and gets the kids through school.

Your employer's 1x or 2x coverage doesn't come close. For someone earning $80,000, two times salary is $160,000. That sounds like a large number until you consider a 30-year mortgage with $280,000 remaining, two kids who are 8 and 11, and a spouse who earns $45,000. The math doesn't work.

Salary Employer Coverage (2x) Recommended Coverage (10x) Gap
$60,000 $120,000 $600,000 $480,000
$80,000 $160,000 $800,000 $640,000
$120,000 $240,000 $1,200,000 $960,000

The Portability Problem

Group life insurance belongs to your employer, not to you. The day you leave that job — voluntarily or not — the coverage ends. You may have a conversion option, but converting a group policy to an individual one at your current age and health status is often expensive and limited.

An individual term policy you own travels with you. It doesn't matter where you work, whether you get laid off, or whether your company changes benefit packages. It's yours.

The Health Window Problem

Group life insurance is typically guaranteed issue — meaning you don't need a medical exam to qualify. That sounds like a benefit, but it also means you're paying for coverage that's priced for the average health of your entire employer group.

If you're young and healthy today, an individual term policy will almost certainly be cheaper per dollar of coverage than your employer plan — and it locks in your rates at your current health status. If you wait until you've developed a health condition to buy individual coverage, your options narrow and your premiums rise.

The right move for most people: keep your employer's free or low-cost group coverage, and layer an individual term policy on top of it to close the gap. That combination gives you meaningful coverage that actually protects your family — and coverage that follows you no matter what happens at work.
