Original Medicare Doesn't Cover Everything

Here's the good news: If you're 65 or older, you're eligible for Medicare.

Here's what many people don't realize: Original Medicare (Parts A and B) does not cover all healthcare expenses. The remaining costs — including deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance — come directly out of your pocket.

Without additional coverage, those out-of-pocket expenses can add up quickly.

What Is Medicare Supplement Insurance?

Medicare Supplement insurance — often called Medigap — works alongside Original Medicare to help cover costs you would otherwise owe.

It does not replace Medicare — it enhances it.

A Supplement plan can help pay for:

  • Copayments
  • Coinsurance
  • Deductibles
  • Other out-of-pocket expenses

Understanding Your Options

In addition to Medicare Supplement plans, Medicare Advantage plans offer an alternative way to receive your Medicare benefits.

Currently, there are 10 standardized Medicare Supplement plan options, each offering different levels of coverage. While the coverage is standardized, pricing varies by carrier.

Choosing the right option requires comparing:

Monthly Premiums

What you pay each month in exchange for coverage — varies by carrier and plan type.

Out-of-Pocket Exposure

Your maximum potential costs for deductibles, copays, and coinsurance each year.

Network Requirements

Whether your preferred doctors and hospitals are included in the plan's provider network.

Additional Benefits

Extra services like dental, vision, hearing, and prescription drug coverage.

That's where expert guidance matters.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Doesn't Medicare cover all my health expenses?

It doesn't cover all your healthcare costs. Medicare's great. But the gap between what it does and doesn't cover comes out-of-pocket. Your pocket. And there's no limit on how high the extra charges can run. Depending solely on "Original Medicare" is a financial disaster waiting to happen.

If I get a plan, does that replace Medicare?

Buying a Supplement plan doesn't replace basic Medicare. Instead, it works in conjunction with it to cover some of the costs you'd otherwise owe, including co-payments, co-insurances, deductibles and more.

What is the difference between Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans work alongside Original Medicare to help pay the out-of-pocket costs that Parts A and B don't cover. You keep your original Medicare and add Medigap on top.

Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans replace Original Medicare entirely. They're offered by private insurers and often bundle Part A, Part B, and sometimes Part D (prescription drug coverage) into a single plan — sometimes with added benefits like dental, vision, or hearing.

Each approach has trade-offs in terms of premiums, flexibility, and provider networks. We can help you compare both options side by side.

When can I enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan?

Your best window is the Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which begins the month you turn 65 and are enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this 6-month window, insurers cannot deny you coverage or charge more due to pre-existing conditions.

Outside of this window, enrollment may be subject to medical underwriting. Reach out to us and we'll help you understand your timing and options.
